Jinan is pressing ahead with major hospital construction projects and grassroots medical reforms as part of its “Strong Provincial Capital” strategy, aiming to balance healthcare resources, improve access, and deliver high-quality services to residents across the city.

In the southern urban district, the new campus of Jinan First People’s Hospital has reached a major milestone, with several buildings already topped out. Covering 71,000 square meters with a total floor area of 208,400 square meters, the facility will house 1,000 inpatient beds and 1,719 parking spaces. Once completed, it will become the first large-scale comprehensive hospital in southern Jinan, easing long-standing pressure on local medical resources and improving healthcare access for surrounding communities.

Meanwhile, in Licheng District, the Jinan Hospital Relocation Project is advancing steadily. The hospital spans 117,568 square meters across two plots, featuring an outpatient and medical technology building, a rehabilitation center, an inpatient tower, and a teaching and research building, all linked by aerial corridors. With 550 planned beds and 931 parking spaces, the project employs advanced construction methods, including BIM digital twin technology, drone-based reverse modeling, and smart site management. This will make it the first intelligent tertiary hospital in the Huashan area, providing modern, efficient healthcare services for a growing population.

Beyond large-scale hospital construction, Jinan is also strengthening grassroots medical capacity. Community health centers and village clinics have been upgraded with new equipment, telemedicine platforms, and rehabilitation facilities. Patients now benefit from cloud-based diagnostic imaging and integrated emergency referral systems. For example, the city’s “one-stop ECG network” has enabled rapid treatment for more than 21,000 acute cardiac patients since 2020.

At the same time, national-level medical expertise is being introduced into Jinan. Partnerships with top Beijing hospitals such as Beijing Tiantan, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and Fuwai Hospital have brought leading specialists to the city, offering advanced treatments locally and reducing the need for patients to travel long distances. Regional medical centers, expert workstations, and multidisciplinary consultation platforms are being established, ensuring that Jinan residents can access cutting-edge care close to home.

The city’s efforts are already showing results. By the end of 2024, Jinan hosted 8,462 medical institutions with 88,800 beds, and its health indicators—such as maternal and infant mortality rates—had reached international standards. Residents’ health literacy has also risen to 38.79%, the highest in Shandong for five consecutive years.

Officials say these developments reflect Jinan’s commitment to building a modern, high-quality healthcare system that combines advanced hospital networks, robust grassroots services, digital innovation, and international-level expertise. As new facilities open and collaborations deepen, the city is poised to become a leading medical hub in the region, ensuring that more citizens can enjoy convenient, affordable, and world-class healthcare.
